The owner and the host who operate “Guest House Oumi” is Tommy san. He is a super warm host who goes the extra mile to make sure guest’s questions, needs are answered and met. He makes a very good egg sandwich for guests to start the day. If you need clothes to be wash and dry, Tommy can provide the service for a small fee (500Yen). He also makes a very good guide book that provide useful info on Kyoto’s attractions and restaurants and cafés around the guest house neighborhood (Nijo/二条) The location of the guest house is quite convenient. It only requires a 3-4min walk to get to Nijo Station. There is a sizeable 100yen shop and a revolving sushi bar restaurant (Kura Sushi) near the guest house and it is a 2 minutes walk.

Tommy was an exceptional and friendly host. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very supportive in assisting us when we transferred our luggage in advance to the guest house. The check in process was smooth and efficient and he had already taken our luggage to our room upstairs when we arrived! Tommy gave us some great recommendations for food and in the morning prepared us breakfast, which was delicious! The location is ideal and minutes away from the nearest JR station. My boyfriend and I spent 3 weeks in Japan and stayed at lots of different places and this is the experience and place that we will remember the most!

Absolutely a 10/10 property. A little far from central areas, but nice and quiet and an easy walk to the JR/Subway station. Very clean, EXCELLENT water pressure in the showers, comfortable beds, and a nice little sitting area for eating or socializing or watching Japanese TV. But (as you’ve read in all the other reviews) Tommy is absolutely the star of the show. One of the most considerate people I’ve ever met, Tommy runs the guesthouse with care and love. He always asks if guests need anything and is quick to help. I truly felt sad to leave and say goodbye!

I had the best time at this guest house. The host was incredibly welcoming, spoke good english and always asked if he could help me with anything. You can really see and feel that he enjoys doing what he’s doing. He even prepared the breakfast himself in the morning for every guest individually, when it suited them. Like what?! The facilities were all very clean, the bed was comfortable and it was very quiet at night, so perfect for a light sleeper like me. I will definitely stay there on my next trip to Kyoto again.

Tommy the host is very kind and thoughtful, friendly but not intrusive Tommy helped to bring luggage to second floor due to steep stairs Room and shared bathroom/kitchen were spotlessly clean Excellent breakfast sandwiches. Room is in a 95 year old house (it feels historic, yet well kept) Location is in a Japanese neighborhood (does not feel crowded with tourists) Walking distance to Nijo Castle Provided a map to identify key useful areas close by
